| Project 01 | Physical Lighting of Objects |

This project consists of a
series of group exercises exploring the various qualities of physical lighting, distinct
aspects of a range of frequently used theatrical light fixtures, an introduction to
design approaches, and lighting console programming. Each group is assigned a similar yet unique still life composition, consisting of a range of objects situated on a table, placed above a floor treatment. Using a variety of spotlights, floodlights, and "texture" lights, demonstrate: 1) each of the seven properties of light as discussed in class demonstrations 2) one of the lighting approaches used frequently in design practice. Map out a light cue sequence that illustrates each aspect, with the goal of presenting a dynamic demonstration. Record the sequence as a series of follow cues, programmed into Studio Theatre's Express Console. The total cue sequence length may not exceed 2 minutes. |
| notes | carefully consider the
audience's point of view to the still life;
determine effective cue time assignments, so that each aspect clearly presented with appropriate observation and analysis time before moving onto the next aspect; assign team members to various roles for the presentation, such as console operator, speaker, usher, etc.; Use variety in revealing the individual properties, specifically in terms of the overall composition. Choose one of the larger items in the still life for the design approach assignment. |
| grading criteria | Project evaluation is based on group participation, clarity (each property distinctly revealed), and performance (evidence of adequate rehearsals to polish the presentation). |
| documentation | Make ten to twelve still photographs (experiment with a combination of 35mm and digital images, if possible). Include one image of each of the seven properties of light, and several selected images from the chosen lighting approach. These images will eventually be posted on your web page. |
